Nyota Parker Throws Out the Schedule on “WHAT IS A TIMELINE ?”
A hip-hop and neo-soul album about refusing to keep anyone else’s schedule, made by an artist who has called three continents home.

Nyota Parker calls her new album “a non-linear journey through my mind,” and that is the best way into it. Thirteen songs, released on her own on October 9, from an artist who has lived in Cape Town, New York, and Montréal and stopped waiting for anyone to tell her when it was time.
“Please just do it now and do it scared.”
Nyota Parker, to Stereofox
The Album
WHAT IS A TIMELINE ? is the sound of an artist getting comfortable in her own voice. Nyota Parker wrote and performed all thirteen songs, pulled in a circle of producers and collaborators, and put it out herself. The guest list reads like a group chat of people she trusts: Kin and Spaceman Dela on “SPELLBOUND,” Doodlebug on “You’re Welcome,” DO, The Outcast, and Avi Caplan on “Day Shift,” Mosez Jones on “Overflow,” and Carllone Hall with Lowe Key on “Break of Dawn.”
She has been clear about how far she has come since her 2024 album, INTRUSIVE THOUGHTS. “I feel way more sure of myself,” she told Stereofox, “I’ve delved deeper into my sound.” You can see that confidence even in the tracklist. The songs on the first side are titled in capitals and the second side in lowercase, which she says started as an accident. She kept it. That is the whole album in miniature: trust the instinct, and let the shape come later.
The lead single, “SAY LESS,” arrived on September 4 and set the tone. The album followed on October 9, and a numbered vinyl edition is already on preorder for anyone who wants to hold it.
Where She’s From
Nyota Parker was born in 2000. She is Congolese and Irish, was raised in Cape Town, spent time in New York, and now makes her home in Montréal. Her influences sit right on the surface: A Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu, Tyler, The Creator, Saba, Noname, and Mick Jenkins. Hip-hop and neo-soul, she says, “will always be” her foundation, even when the rest of her playlist runs to The Garden and Title Fight.
Our favorite story from her Stereofox interview is about Common. She met him in New York, and he stopped on his way to a book signing to talk with her. “I view him as an uncle even though he doesn’t know it,” she said. It is a sweet line, and it says a lot about how she carries her heroes: close, grateful, and without pretending she is anywhere other than where she is.
That is what makes the album’s question land. A title like WHAT IS A TIMELINE ? could read as a shrug. From someone who has moved across three continents and built her catalog on her own terms, it reads more like a permission slip.
Start Here
Start with “SAY LESS,” then let the record wander the way she meant it to. When Stereofox asked what she would tell herself in 2030, she kept it to three words: “We made it.” Given how far she has already come, we believe her.
